An art song is a composition for solo voice with piano accompaniment. Popular in Europe throughout the 19th century, composer Harry Burleigh was instrumental in popularizing the form in America in the early 20th century. ‘The Young Warrior’ was composed in 1915 prior to America's entry into the First World War. Burleigh’s use of a simulated bugle call throughout lends to its martial feel. Poet Weldon Johnson’s subject, a son, opens by consoling his mother and asking for her prayers, not for safety but for bravery, steadfastness and fortitude, as he prepares to leave for war. Then, as the battle nears, Burleigh’s tremolo creates tension and the listener can feel the emotional moments before the trenches are emptied. Translated to Italian, ‘The Young Warrior’ became the most popular song in Italy, America’s ally, during the war.
